Monastery of the world

Founded almost 1000 years ago. A constant source of inspiration for the region: Admont Abbey.

Impressions of the monastery

In 1074, Benedictine monks from Salzburg founded their own abbey in Admont in Styria. Although it has changed several times over the centuries, it still stands on the same site. Visible from afar, framed by high mountains and frequented by around 80,000 visitors every year thanks to its unique collection of books and museums.

The Admont Abbey Library, at 70 meters long also the largest monastic book hall in the world, is undoubtedly the main attraction with its colourful ceiling frescoes, wooden sculptures and golden busts. However, a multimedia presentation of the monastery and the Museum of Contemporary Art are also impressive.

Abbot Gerhard Hafner

The 68th Abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Admont was born in Trieben on October 19, 1964. After attending elementary school in his home town, he went to the monastery grammar school in Stainach. He entered the seminary in Graz in 1983. He has worked at Admont Abbey since 1994. Gerhard Hafner has been the new abbot of the monastery since 25.01.2017.
