The Germanic tribes considered the spruce a protective tree and were supposed to ward off illnesses. Even today, it is often used in naturopathy for cough syrups for colds or as an ointment containing spruce resin for tension or inflammation. Due to its properties, the spruce is also popular in wood processing:
Spruce is currently the most common type of wood in Europe. In Austria alone, it covers 64% of the total forest area and is therefore the most common tree in domestic forests.
